Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
