Two Victims Named in the Ivy League School Incident as Authorities Persist in Manhunt for Gunman.
Both young individuals who were killed in the recent tragic incident at Brown University were honored at the start of the week – while an intensive search for their killer persisted following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person detained in connection in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.
She served as second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies publicly, remarking: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.
The Shooting Incident
An additional nine individuals were injured in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Officials stated late Sunday that a 24-year-man detained in a police operation at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the campus earlier in the day was released from custody.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”
Ongoing Concerns
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, admitted: “This will probably generate renewed concern for our city”.
The assailant began shooting inside a lecture hall in the building on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a police source reported to the Associated Press.
Officers that raided the hotel seized two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was taken into custody, as was reported.
The Wounded Victims
Among those wounded, a single scholar was allowed to go home, mentioned Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private academy in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
Additional Memorials
Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at Brown University she was a radiant presence in that institution as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his relatives, friends, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his promising future.”
