The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
