Steam Baths and Natural Wonders on Scandinavia’s Serene Spa Island

Should you travel to the small island of this peaceful retreat in the Gothenburg archipelago during the late 1800s or early 1900s, it's likely you were seeking a remedy for respiratory illness. In that era, the isle attracted city dwellers in search of ocean air, sea bathing, and peace. Because of the efforts of a renowned local doctor, a number of sanatoriums earned such a excellent reputation that the island grew into a health retreat. Though those heyday are behind us, a new holistic hotel seeks to revive that healing atmosphere.

A Sanctuary of Calm and Fresh Breezes

The exact conditions that initially brought health seekers to the island endure even now. Nestled and shielded against harsh winds, the sunny shoreline basks in sunshine from dawn to dusk. There’s no smog here. Styrsö is such a calm place – you can genuinely de-stress and reset,” remarked the hotel manager during a our visit. The moment you step on the ferry, your breathing slows down and you begin inhaling the good air.”

An Adventure of Unhurried Discovery

Adopting the ethos of taking it easy, we journeyed by train from the UK using Interrail passes, stopping overnight in Hamburg. Reaching Gothenburg in the late afternoon, we explored the historic district before hopping on a tram to Saltholmen harbour and a quick passenger vessel. Under an hour, we moved from city center to island hotel.

Overlooking the coast with stunning views of nearby Donsö island, the luxury hotel is a modern creation furnished in calming Nordic colors, complete with a bright restaurant, wellness area, and outdoor pool. Our suite – part of the ocean-facing options – was spacious, uncluttered, and featured a outdoor space.

Sustainability and Local Focus

Kusthotellet is operated with eco-friendliness at its core – using geothermal energy and water-based underfloor heating. Moreover aiming for sustainability status. All elements is acquired from nearby providers, from the employees and culinary components to the seaweed and minerals used in the relaxation offerings.

Havskuren is divided into dual areas. The Salt Source features foot baths, beauty services, and a rest zone. The Heat Source contains a sauna, steam bath, and cold dip. There’s also a small gym. Massages are scheduled for the coming months.

Culinary offerings feature Scandinavian-influenced dishes such as scallops, plaice, and wholesome vegan options.

Roaming the Tranquil Island

Pedaling, walking, sea swimming, and culinary enjoyment are essential parts of the guest experience. We were provided with brand new two-wheelers to traverse the compact island, which is practically free of cars. Over three days, the only traffic we encountered on the narrow roads were bikes, golf carts, and motorized trikes that looked like utility vehicles.

On a sunny day, after shopping at the local store, we cycled to Lilla Lyngnskär connected by a footbridge for a alfresco dining experience. Afterward, we still had room for Swedish coffee break – savouring espressos with a baked treat and a classic chokladbollar at a local café that once belonged to a herring merchant.

Woodland Hikes and Seafood Feasts

Strolls on the wooded south end of the island included a unforgettable evening hike along a footpath leading to a historical site at the highest point, which offers a panoramic vista across the southern Gothenburg archipelago. Returning in the night, we walked among the path with scores of minute frogs, many no larger than a coin. The amphibians likely ended up as meals for the herons we observed while exploring.

At the hotel, we dined in the elegant restaurant with views of the water. The menu includes locally sourced seafood dishes such as shellfish, flatfish, and plant-based vegan options using locally farmed vegetables. We sampled starters of root vegetables and foraged goods, followed by toasted hazelnuts over a creamy potato base – all was delicious.

Putting on wetsuits and entered the transparent, surprisingly warm seawater, learning from our guide sustainably harvest sea plants.

Wellness Rituals

At night, we experienced the spa. Malin handed us a range of aromatic balms prepared on-site, and we enjoyed the soaking tubs, steam room, and plunge pool. Following that, we unwinded in the warm pool with views of the water and the twinkling lights of Donsö.

Bridge Crossing and Harbour Restaurants

A bridge has joined Styrsö with adjacent Donsö for more than 50 years, so we biked across for an open-air lunch at a quayside café run by island-born sisters. Their dishes feature ingredients sourced by friends, tasty bread and cakes prepared by family, and weekly music. Later, we came back to the harbour for a delectable dinner featuring seasonal produce, butternut squash, and a cauliflower sauce at a historic warehouse that now operates as a eatery.

Seaweed Safari and Outdoor Cooking

Our final day was focused on a marine foraging tour experience with a local naturalist who transitioned from a potter. We commenced with a historical island loop of the resident zone of the island, home to many of the local population. Our guide took us leisurely up and down small hills adorned by well-kept cottages, each distinct.
