We're in 2025, and the advertising strategy for the Sonic kart racing title aim to reference the classic Sega vs. Nintendo dynamic. An recent ad spot for the hedgehog's racing game apparently uses pixelated clips of Nintendo's open-world racer, using it to suggest that the rival title does not fully utilize its open-world framework.
Questioning the Competition
"You've all played the famous franchise, it's enjoyable, there's no need to feature it," the promo starts. "Imagine if you could blast through and compete on another level?" The spot then goes on to showcase many of the game's key aspects, including deep car personalization and cross-play support.
"Alternatively, perhaps you would like to drive around on the open road?" the announcer asks, filled with irony.
A History of Rivalry
This may not be the initial instance that the developers behind Sega's title have targeted Mario Kart World, it is certainly the most direct they have been regarding the head-to-head battle. The commercial also references a old-school commercial for the 16-bit system that told fans about the hardware's "blast processing" power. At the time, Sega highlighted its hardware advantage by featuring a speeding vehicle tearing around a course. Nearing the conclusion, it contrasted the SNES to an aging Winnebago that had Super Mario Kart displayed on a old TV strapped to the rear of the vehicle with a rope.
Release Details
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is set to release next week on Sept. 25 for Nintendo's hybrid console, Sony's previous-gen system, PlayStation 5, computer, Xbox One, and Series X. Though, players who pre-order can access it sooner... unless they are on Nintendo Switch. Oh well.
