Weather experts are reporting an icy beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the weather service.

Celebrations Under Open but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be cold, so warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Warnings Activated

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this indicated the weather could to lead to major effects across the NHS and care systems. This involves a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
