Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
