An international commission of inquiry has stated that Israeli authorities has committed genocide against the Palestinian population in Gaza.
The report show there are solid evidence to conclude that multiple of the five genocidal acts under international law have been perpetrated since the beginning of the war with militant groups in recent months.
Key Findings
- Targeting civilians of the group
- Inflicting physical and mental harm
- Intentionally creating conditions calculated to destroy the community
- Preventing births through attacks on medical facilities
The commission cites statements by government officials and the behavior of Israeli forces as evidence of destructive aims.
"Genocidal intent was the clear conclusion from the behavior of Israeli authorities," the report asserts.
Official Denial
Israel has strongly denied the allegations, calling it "distorted and false".
An official accused the commission members of serving as "Hamas proxies" and using "falsehoods laundered and repeated by others".
Israeli officials insist that their actions are focused on neutralizing Hamas and not targeting civilians.
Background
The conflict started after an unprecedented attack on southern Israel by Hamas on 7 October 2023, during which 1,200 people were killed and over 250 were taken hostage.
Since then, Israeli attacks have caused the loss of over 64,000 of people in Gaza, according to local sources.
Humanitarian Crisis
- Most of the residents has been repeatedly displaced
- Over 90% of homes are damaged or destroyed
- Medical and sanitation systems have collapsed
- Famine has been declared in parts of Gaza
International Law
Investigators emphasizes that nations worldwide have an obligation to prevent and punish such acts, warning that inaction could amount to involvement.
Meanwhile, the International Court of Justice is hearing a complaint brought by a member state that charges Israeli forces of genocide.
