Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers stormed the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.
Local residents disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.
